Getting accurate measurements is the key to window treatments that fit perfectly and look amazing. Different styles need different measuring techniques, so here’s a simple guide to help:
Drapes
-
Inside Mount: Measure the width and height of the window frame from edge to edge. Add extra width if you want fullness or coverage beyond the frame. For height, measure from the top of the window to where you want the drapes to fall (floor or sill).
-
Outside Mount: Measure the area you want the drapes to cover on the wall, including space on either side for stacking back when open.
Roman Shades
-
Usually inside mount. Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom of the window, then use the narrowest measurement. Measure height from the top of the frame to the window sill or desired length.
Roller Shades and Solar Shades
-
Can be inside or outside mount. Measure width and height similarly to Roman shades, making sure to record the narrowest width measurement for inside mount. For outside mount, measure the total area to be covered.
Tools You’ll Need
-
A steel measuring tape
-
Notepad or phone to record measurements
-
Step stool for hard-to-reach windows
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Measuring only one spot — always measure in three places for width and height.
-
Forgetting to note inside vs outside mount preferences.
-
Rounding measurements incorrectly (better to be a little generous).
